Beginner Tutorial #1

Tue Aug 8, 2006, 7:30 AM
I have had several beginner UF users asking me how I make my fractals. I am going to start posting some "mini tutorials" with a upr attached in my journal here. This first one is a very easy fractal that was one of the first ones I posted to the UF list. So the upr is already available if you are a member of the list.

I started a new fractal with 990807a Mset in the mt.ufm folder. I hit F7 and explored until I found a nice single spiral. I then went to the Outside tab and selected the ucl "Doodads" in the ldm.ucl folder. The only parameters I adjusted were the Morph function 1(at the very bottom) and the Twist 1(Re) and ended up with this nice rounded shape which I liked a lot when I first stared using UF. I then adjusted the gradient to end up with the white as the hot piont of the shapes. I duplicated that layer and set the "Merge mode" to Multiply. I adjusted the gradient by making the black color point blue and the yellow more saturated and a little darker. I then moved the slider until I achieved the effect you see when just the bottom two layers turned on. I then duplicated this layer again and changed the ucl to "Thin Orbit Traps" in the sam.ucl folder. I changed the "Shape" to Cocked Hat to achieve the effect you see. I set the merge mode at multiply again and played with the gradient, making the yellow more golden. I went back and played with the other two gradients again until I finally ended up with something I liked. Here is a link to the image: [link]

I am attaching the upr for you to study and if there are any questions, do not hesitate to ask. :)

Select everything, being sure to include the {s and the top and bottom and copy and paste into an open fractal window (the default works fine).

Dear Lily, thank you very much for your advise and your willingness to teach sth from your kung fu (to have kung fu means to be master in any kind of creative activity). Wishing you all the best. :-) M.

Thanks! I thought a beginner type fractal was in order: it has no masking or transperancy and uses the standard gradient with easily done changes. I will try to have increasing levels of difficulty in future tutorials. :D
